How to play this or that

The rules fit in one line: someone reads two options, everyone picks one, nobody gets to say "both". How you run it depends on where you are.

Out loud with friends

One person reads a question. Everyone points left for the first option and right for the second, all at once, so nobody copies. Whoever is alone on their side explains themselves.

On your Instagram story

Play a round, tap "Save image for story" and post the card. Or post one question per story with the poll sticker and share the results the next day.

Over text, with a link

Finish a round and send your link. Friends open it, guess what you picked, and get a score out of 10. It works in any chat app and nobody needs an account.

In a meeting or class

Put the game on the shared screen and let people vote by raising a hand or typing 1 or 2 in the chat. The work questions page has a full-screen mode for this.

What makes a good this or that question

The best ones are close calls. "Pizza or a salad" has an obvious answer for most people; "pizza or burgers" starts a debate. Keep both options the same size and the same mood, so neither one is the joke.

Short beats clever. Two to four words per side reads well out loud and fits on a story. Save the long, strange setups for the funny questions, where the setup is the point.

Match the room. Questions about money, bodies, religion or politics turn a game into an argument, especially at work or with people you just met. The lists on this page avoid them, so you can use any of them without checking first.

Questions people ask

What are this or that questions?

Questions with exactly two answers, like "coffee or tea?". You pick one, with no "both" and no "it depends". They are a quick way to break the ice, learn what someone likes, or fill a quiet moment.

How do my friends guess my picks?

When you finish a round you get a link. Your picks are stored inside that link, after the # sign, not on our servers. Friends open it, guess each pick, and see how many they got right.

Is this a random this or that generator?

Yes. Every round draws questions at random from the set you chose, so two rounds are rarely the same. Choose All for a mix, or a set like Couples or Family.

How many questions are in a round?

You choose 5, 10 or 20 above the cards. Ten takes about 30 seconds and makes a good length for friends to guess.

Are these questions OK for kids?

Everything on this page is fine for all ages, and the kids and family list is written for younger players. Nothing here is about dating beyond the couples list.

Can I print or copy the list?

Yes. Each list has a Copy button that puts the questions on your clipboard, ready to paste into a doc, a slide or a chat. You can also print the page from your browser.
